St Catherine, Jamaica – A pre-dawn police operation in Wynter’s Pen, St Catherine, on Wednesday ended in bloodshed, leaving two men dead and a policeman nursing injuries.
The deceased have been identified as:
- 23-year-old Malachi Delano McLean, otherwise called “Cripple”, unemployed, of Jones Avenue, Spanish Town.
- 24-year-old Nickoy Nelson, otherwise called “Butch Boy”, a mason of Casual Farm, Wynter’s Pen.
Reports are that about 7:00 a.m., lawmen launched a targeted operation in the community. During the sweep, police entered a room in a house where the two men were spotted.
While searching the premises, gunfire erupted. A policeman’s ballistic vest was struck and damaged, leaving him with injuries. Officers returned fire, and both men were hit.
They were taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where doctors pronounced them dead. The injured officer was treated and released.
Police say they recovered a Canik TP9 Elite 9mm pistol, affixed with a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition, during the incident.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched a probe into the matter.
