Police have arrested and charged two men from Manchester in connection with the deadly robbery and murder that occurred at a supermarket in Maggotty, St Elizabeth, last month.
The suspects, 30-year-old electrician Ramanno Smile and 35-year-old chef Shawn Reid, both of Knock Patrick, Manchester, were apprehended on Thursday, November 14, by detectives from the St Elizabeth Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).
They have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravation, possession of prohibited weapons, and unauthorized possession of ammunition.
The charges stem from an incident on October 19, 2024, when the two men allegedly entered a supermarket in Maggotty posing as customers. Reports indicate that one of the suspects drew a handgun while the other stood as a lookout. The armed man reportedly jumped over the counter and robbed the owner of an undetermined amount of phone cards, cigarettes, and money.
During the robbery, 62-year-old Aggrey Atkinson, a businessman from Russell Hill in St Elizabeth, was shot and killed. The assailants then escaped in a waiting vehicle, fleeing the scene before police arrived.
A report was made to the police, and an investigation was launched. The two men were subsequently located and arrested, with two illegal firearms seized during the operation.
The men are currently in police custody as their court dates are being finalized. The St Elizabeth CIB continues its investigations into the incident, as the community mourns the loss of Atkinson, a well-known and respected local businessman.
