Two members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force have been charged in connection with an alleged assault at the Highgate Police Station in St. Mary.
Corporal Garth Brown and Constable Shaquille Murphy have been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident said to have occurred in September 2023. The charges were laid after an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions ruling that the matter should proceed.
According to investigators, medical evidence and an eyewitness supported the complainant’s account that he was assaulted while handcuffed at the police station.
Both officers appeared in the St. Mary Parish Court last Thursday, where they were each granted $200,000 bail.
INDECOM noted that since January 2024, a total of 54 law enforcement officers have been charged in matters arising from investigations conducted by the agency.
The case is expected to return to court at a later date
