MANCHESTER, United Kingdom – Panic and terror gripped the Jewish community in Manchester on Yom Kippur, after a vicious terrorist attack left two people dead and three others seriously wounded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Thursday.
Reports are that a man drove his vehicle into pedestrians outside the synagogue before attacking with a knife, stabbing a security guard and several worshippers.
Police say the suspect, who appeared to be wearing an explosive vest, was shot dead at the scene by armed officers. The bomb squad was called in to secure the area.
Authorities have since confirmed that the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack.
In addition to the main suspect who was killed, police also arrested two other men in connection with the attack.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the assault, calling it “vile” and declaring that the attacker “targeted Jews because they are Jews.” Starmer cut short his overseas trip to return home for emergency security meetings, while promising increased protection at synagogues and Jewish sites across the United Kingdom.
The horrific incident has sent shockwaves across Britain and the international Jewish community, with leaders urging calm while calling for vigilance.
The investigation is ongoing.
