Fort Lauderdale, Florida – Two individuals were tragically found deceased within the wheel well of a JetBlue aircraft after it landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Monday night.
While the identities of the deceased have not been confirmed, it is believed they may be of Jamaican origin.
JetBlue confirmed in a statement on Tuesday that the bodies were discovered during a routine post-flight maintenance inspection of Flight 1801, which had arrived from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.
The Broward County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the individuals’ presence in the wheel well. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct autopsies to determine the cause of death.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), attempting to stow away in an aircraft’s wheel well is extremely dangerous and often fatal. The landing gear compartment offers little space, and individuals attempting to travel in this manner are at risk of severe injuries, suffocation, or hypothermia during flight.
The incident has not disrupted operations at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
