In a major shake-up of the United States Government’s security leadership on Thursday, President Donald Trump dismissed Kristi Noem from her role as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ending a controversial and closely scrutinised tenure.
The announcement came via social media, where Trump confirmed that Noem, who had faced mounting bipartisan criticism over her leadership of immigration enforcement and departmental operations, will be succeeded by Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma.
Noem’s departure follows intense congressional hearings this week during which lawmakers from both parties challenged her on a range of issues, including the department’s handling of immigration enforcement, federal spending, and public communication campaigns. Her appearances before Senate and House panels were marked by pointed exchanges and questions surrounding departmental management.
Despite the abrupt end to her DHS role, the White House indicated that Trump intends to appoint Noem to a newly created diplomatic position linked to a Western Hemisphere security initiative expected to be unveiled in the coming days.
Shortly after the announcement became public, Noem delivered remarks at a law enforcement event in Nashville, Tennessee. She addressed departmental priorities and support for federal workers but did not reference the staffing decision.
Her removal closes a chapter that had drawn significant political attention, as calls for her resignation had intensified in recent months.
Senator Mullin, Trump’s nominee to lead DHS, said he plans to refocus the department on its core national security mission. Formal confirmation proceedings in the Senate are expected in the weeks ahead.
