Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Jamaica as Potential Cyclone Approaches

KINGSTON, Jamaica — A tropical storm warning is now in effect for Jamaica, as an Area of Low Pressure over the west-central Caribbean Sea becomes increasingly organized. This system has the potential to develop into a tropical cyclone by Monday morning, posing a possible threat to the island within the next 36 hours.

As of 4:00 p.m., the system, designated as Potential Tropical Cyclone Number 18, was centered near latitude 13.0 degrees North and longitude 77.1 degrees West, approximately 600 kilometers (373 miles) southwest of Negril Point and 555 kilometers (345 miles) south of Kingston. Moving northeast at 11 km/h (7 mph), the system is expected to strengthen into a tropical depression tonight, with steady intensification forecast over the coming days.

On its projected track, the system will continue moving towards Jamaica tonight, potentially nearing the island by late Monday evening. It is expected to pass close to Jamaica before approaching the Cayman Islands by Tuesday and Wednesday.

Impacts on Jamaica

With maximum sustained winds near 55 km/h (35 mph) and higher gusts, the storm is forecast to bring heavy rainfall and strong, gusty winds across eastern and southern parishes on Monday and Tuesday. These conditions may lead to landslides in vulnerable areas.

The Jamaica Meteorological Service has warned of widespread showers and thunderstorms, particularly affecting marine areas along the southern coast. Winds could reach tropical storm force, creating hazardous conditions for small craft.

All small craft operators, including fishers from cays and banks, are advised to head to port immediately and secure their vessels in preparation for safe harbor.
