A 36-year-old Trinidad and Tobago national has been sentenced in the United States after being extradited from Jamaica in connection with a large-scale firearms trafficking operation.
Shem Wayne Alexander of Port of Spain received a sentence of four years and nine months in federal prison last Friday. The ruling was handed down by a U.S. District Judge in the Middle District of Florida following his conviction for conspiracy to smuggle firearms from the United States to Trinidad and Tobago. The court also ordered the forfeiture of weapons seized during the investigation.
Alexander was taken into custody in Kingston in November 2024 while visiting his girlfriend. He was extradited to the United States the following month and later entered a guilty plea in August 2025.
At the time of his arrest, Alexander held several professional roles, including managing director of an athletics company, head coach of a Trinidad and Tobago Premier League football club, and coach of an under-14 team.
Court documents outlined that between April 2019 and April 2022, Alexander and his associates unlawfully exported more than 200 firearms and related components from Florida to Trinidad and Tobago. The shipments reportedly included upper and lower receivers, gun parts kits, and various firearm components.
A significant seizure linked to the case occurred on April 21, 2021, at Piarco International Airport in Port of Spain. Officers from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service and the Customs and Excise Division intercepted a shipment declared as household goods. Concealed within two punching bags were multiple firearms, including 11 nine-millimetre pistols, two .38 calibre revolvers, a 12-gauge semi-automatic shotgun, AR-15-style barrels and foregrips, dozens of magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and other accessories.
Investigators stated that the shipment had been arranged without proper disclosure of its true contents to the carrier.
United States authorities acknowledged the assistance of Jamaican officials in securing Alexander’s extradition, including the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Jamaica Constabulary Force.
