Westmoreland, Jamaica: A somber atmosphere at St. George’s Parish Church in Savanna-la-Mar turned into one of shock and sorrow on Thursday when Dr. Robert D’Oyley, a respected organist and well-known funeral director, tragically collapsed and died while performing at a funeral service.
The church was filled with mourners attending the funeral of Dane ‘Blushy’ Foote, a prominent hotelier and contractor in Westmoreland. Dr. D’Oyley, who owned and operated D’Oyley’s Funeral Services, was performing an organ prelude when the music abruptly stopped, leaving the congregation in stunned silence.
Several medical professionals present at the service immediately attempted to revive D’Oyley on the spot. Despite their efforts, he remained unresponsive and was quickly transported to Savanna-la-Mar Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, to the devastation of those who knew him.
The funeral service, already marked by the grief of Foote’s passing, continued to its conclusion, but without the organ music that D’Oyley had been providing. Only the final hymn was sung a cappella by the congregation, many of whom were visibly moved as news of D’Oyley’s death spread through the church.
Dr. D’Oyley was more than just the organist for St. George’s Parish Church; he was a beloved figure in the community, known for his kindness, dedication to his work, and comforting presence during times of loss. His unexpected death has left the parish and the wider community reeling, as they mourn not only the loss of a respected organist but also a man who had served them in their most difficult moments.
Dr. D’Oyley had been a fixture at St. George’s Parish Church for many years, and his passing has created a void that will be difficult to fill. The church has announced that a memorial service will be held in his honor in the coming days, allowing the community to pay their respects to a man who gave so much to them in life and in death.
