Pembroke, New York (McKoy’s News) – A devastating bus crash along the Interstate 90 near Pembroke in Upstate New York has left at least four people dead and dozens more injured, following a tragic accident early Friday morning, August 22.
According to the New York State Police, the tour bus was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls back to New York City when the driver lost control just before the Pembroke exit, causing the vehicle to veer into the median, overcorrect, and overturn, landing on its side in a ditch.
More than 50 people were on board, including the driver. Authorities say almost all passengers sustained injuries, with 47 individuals transported to area hospitals for treatment. Cuts, bruises, head trauma, and broken limbs were among the reported injuries.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies, including medical helicopters, rushed to the scene in what was described as a mass casualty incident. Several passengers were ejected or became trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
Among the deceased is at least one child, and another remains in serious condition at Oishei Children’s Hospital, according to Kaleida Health. Two dozen patients were also treated at Erie County Medical Center, with others taken to Strong Memorial Hospital.
Authorities initially believed a semi-truck was involved, but later confirmed the bus was the only vehicle in the crash.
Most passengers are said to be of Indian, Chinese, or Filipino descent. The driver survived and is reportedly in stable condition.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul confirmed she had been briefed on the tragedy, adding that her team is coordinating with the New York State Police and local officials. “Rescue and recovery efforts are underway,” she said in a statement on X.
The eastbound lanes of the I-90 were completely shut down following the crash, with heavy traffic delays and detours still in place. Authorities have urged motorists to seek alternate routes as investigations continue.
