Hanover, Jamaica – June 2, 2025 — A family outing ended in heartbreak on Sunday when an eight-year-old boy tragically drowned in a river in the Mt Peace district of Hanover.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. while the child was swimming with his father. The boy reportedly slipped into a deep section of the river and began struggling in the water. Despite desperate attempts by his father to save him, the child was swept under before he could be reached.
Emergency services were quickly contacted, and the Lucea Fire Department responded with a team that included trained swift water rescue personnel and emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Divers from the local community also joined the effort.
After an intense search, the boy’s body was eventually recovered from the river. He was rushed to the hospital by emergency responders, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The incident has cast a somber mood over the Mt Peace community, where residents have expressed shock and sorrow over the loss. Local authorities are reminding the public to exercise extreme caution when swimming in rivers, especially during the summer months when such tragic incidents tend to increase.
