A promising young university graduate is in critical condition after a horrific boating accident in the Bahamas left her with catastrophic injuries. Hannah Smith, 22, was celebrating her recent graduation with top honors from Miles College, Alabama, when a dream vacation turned into a nightmare.
Smith was enjoying an excursion to Pearl Island—a popular tourist spot near Nassau known for its swimming pigs and dolphins—when she reportedly fell from the side of a pontoon boat as it was docking. According to witnesses, she was suddenly pulled underwater by the boat’s propeller, which left her with both legs partially severed.
The accident occurred on May 3, as the pontoon ferry returned to Nassau Cruise Port at around 3:55 PM. Panicked cries of “she jumped off” alerted the captain, who immediately shut off the engine. Two female passengers acted quickly, grabbing Hannah’s arm and pulling her from the blood-filled water.
She was rushed to a local hospital in Nassau and later airlifted to the United States for emergency surgery. Hannah remains in a critical condition.
Family Rejects Claims of Intoxication
Speculation has arisen that alcohol may have contributed to the accident, with some reports suggesting Hannah jumped into the water. Her family, however, vehemently denies this.
“Hannah was not intoxicated. She fell from the boat,” said her mother, Tracy Smith. “It’s hurtful to say she jumped, because she did not.”
Tracy also expressed concern about the investigation, questioning why authorities did not interview Hannah’s best friend and witness, Brooklyn Pitre. “Do they have fun? Yes. Were they drunk? No. Did she jump? No,” she said. “There are so many things that could have happened—was there a safety mechanism turned off? Was the boat rocking? We don’t know. But I want the truth.”
Her father, Marvin Smith, also dismissed claims of alcohol involvement, saying doctors confirmed Hannah was “coherent” and “not inebriated” upon arrival at the hospital.
A Life of Promise Shatteredf
Hannah had recently graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in communications and graphic design. A member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority and a recognized leader on campus, she was described as a “scholar, leader and community advocate.”
“Hannah now finds herself in need of the community’s support,” Marvin wrote in a GoFundMe campaign launched to help cover extensive medical and rehabilitation costs. “She’s facing multiple surgeries and a long road to recovery.”
Miles College issued a public statement, saying, “Hannah exemplifies the Golden Standard, and we are believing in her full recovery. We ask our Miles family and extended community to keep her lifted in prayer.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Royal Bahamas Police are continuing their investigation, stating that Hannah “entered the water from a vessel she was a passenger on while it was attempting to dock” and suffered “serious injuries to her lower body caused by the vessel’s propeller.”
As the investigation unfolds, Hannah’s family remains at her side, clinging to hope and calling for answers.
“She is light. She is love. She is the strongest of us all,” said her sister Rachel. “This boating accident will not define her life. We need her to have many more birthdays, more holidays, more life experiences.”
