Top Seeds Clear Round One in Their All Jamaica Senior Squash Championships

The top four seeded players in the 45th All Jamaica Senior Squash Championships cleared the first round after winning all their matches in straight sets. The championships are being played at the Liguanea Club in Kingston, the home of the Jamaica Squash Association.

Number one seed Lewis Walters defeated Alex Chin in just seventeen minutes with scores of 11/5, 11/1 11/2. Walters wasted no time in game one, sprinting to 9/1 which quickly became 10/1 but Chin rallied to take some points off him to end that game at 11/5. In the second game, Chin got his first point after Walters had already scored 10. Game 2 ended on 11/1. Chin started positively in game three getting the first two points but that’s all he would get in that game as Walters bagged the next 11 points to take that game 11/2.

He was happy with the win but was cautious about the other matches to come. “Hopefully I’ll be playing on Saturday and I’ll be winning but just taking it one match at a time” said Walters.

When he was asked about the competition, he said “I’ll tell you in two days time (laughs), obviously yeah really good players. I’ve had some battles with them in the past so definitely not going to be taking any of those players lightly. So I’ll hopefully just come out and bring my best game.”

Walters who has represented Jamaica many times and was ranked under one hundred in the past, has not played in Jamaica since 2019 but was happy to be back. “It’s great to be back here, as you’ve said I’ve not been back here for five (or) six years now, but yeah it’s good to be back. It’s good to have a good crowd out tonight and yeah it’s great to be back on court in Jamaica.

Number two seed Bruce Burrowes got the better of Ethan Miller after posting scores of 11/2, 11/4, 11/2. Miller is the junior champion. He won that title on Tuesday when he defeated Max Henzell in straight sets.

Tahjia Lumley, the number three seed over powered Aman Dhiman in the face of stiff competition. Scores in the match were 11/8, 11/6, 11/8 in favour of Lumley in 25 minutes.

Jonathan Walker shortened the match time to just 17 minutes after posting scores of 11/2, 11/1, 11/7 against Nirmal Balani. Walker is seed fourth in the championships.

Jake Mahfood who captained team Blown to win last year’s KPMG League also won his match in straight sets against Aaron Levy. That match was interrupted in the second game by a sudden downpour of rain which resulted in leaks on the court. The players changed court and continued the match which ended with scores of 11/6, 11/4, 11/5 to Mahfood.

Ladies champion Mary Mahfood is back to defend her title and will be in action Thursday night. This year’s junior champion Mehar Trehan will also be on court. She hopes to reach the senior final on Saturday.
