Back-to-back Olympic double sprint champion Elaine Thompson Herah, was named among the top five finalists for the 2021 Female World Athlete of the Year 2020 award. The male and female World Athletes of the Year will be announced virtually on December 1, 2021.
Thompson Herah who ended her 2021 season, as the world-leading 100m and 200m at 10.54 seconds and 21.53 seconds and the Olympic 100m, 200m, and 4x100m champion, Diamond League 100M champion, and national 100m and 200m records, second fastest of all time.
The 29-year-old would become the third Jamaican woman to win after Merlene Ottey who won in 1990 and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013. Thompson Herah is the only Jamaican, who has been nominated for either the Male or Female Athlete of the Year award for 2021.

– Olympic 4x400m champion
– Set two world 400m hurdles records
Yulimar Rojas, VEN
– Olympic triple jump champion
– Diamond League triple jump champion
– World triple jump record
Voting procedure for 2021 World Athletes of the Year
A three-way voting process determined the finalists.
The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family cast their votes by email, while fans voted online via the World Athletics social media platforms. The World Athletics Council’s vote counted for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes each counted for 25% of the final result.
Voting closed on November 6.
