Portland, Jamaica – Thirty Haitians who were part of a group that landed on a beach in Kensington, Portland, on Sunday, September 22, have been repatriated.
The group, which included children, was moved from a holding area in Manchioneal to the Boundbrook Wharf facility under police escort, where they boarded a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard vessel bound for Haiti earlier today.
Police reports indicate that five more Haitians, who came ashore with the group, remain at large. Lawmen have intensified their search across the parish in an effort to locate them.
According to reports, the Haitians fled their homeland due to escalating political unrest, gang violence, persecution, famine, and lack of economic opportunities.
Following the illegal landing on Sunday, joint operations between the police and the JDF were launched across Portland. Over the course of three days, a total of 30 Haitians were captured and have since been sent back.
The police say operations will continue until the remaining five Haitians are found.
