Teenager Becomes Ninth Victim of Suspected Methanol Poisoning in Laos

Bangkok, Thailand — A 19-year-old Australian woman has tragically become the ninth person to die from suspected methanol poisoning during a vacation in Laos. Holly Bowles, from Melbourne, passed away in a hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday, November 22, according to reports.

Bowles’s death follows the earlier passing of her close friend, 19-year-old Bianca Jones, who died just one day earlier under similar circumstances in the popular party town of Vang Vieng. The two teens, along with several other tourists, are believed to have consumed methanol-laced vodka during their stay at the Nana Backpackers Hostel in Vang Vieng.

In a statement issued by Bowles’s grieving family, they expressed their deep sorrow: “It is with broken hearts, and we are so sad to say that our beautiful girl Holly is now at peace. We find comfort and solace in knowing that Holly brought so much joy and happiness to so many people.”

The family went on to reflect on Bowles’s adventurous spirit: “Holly was living her best life, traveling through Southeast Asia, meeting new friends, and enjoying incredible experiences. As her parents, we were always so incredibly proud of everything Holly did. Holly was an amazing big sister to James, and she always looked out for him.”

Bowles and Jones are among six victims who have died after consuming the tainted alcohol. The pair were reportedly among a group of tourists who were offered “free shots” at the hostel, which is known for attracting partygoers. In addition to Bowles and Jones, a British woman, Simone White, 28, also fell ill after drinking the laced vodka, along with two Danish women in their 20s and a 56-year-old U.S. citizen.

Methanol, a toxic industrial alcohol, is often added to cheap spirits like vodka as a cheaper alternative to ethanol, the type of alcohol that is safe for human consumption. Even small amounts of methanol can cause severe poisoning, leading to symptoms such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and, in some cases, death.

Local authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Duong Duc Toan, the manager of the Nana Backpackers Hostel, was detained by police in connection with the poisoning. The hostel owner, who has denied any wrongdoing, claims the vodka was purchased from a certified distributor and was served as a “gesture of hospitality” to around 100 guests. He further asserted that no other guests had reported any issues with the drinks.

In response to the tragic deaths, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese offered his condolences, saying, “I am saddened to hear of the tragic passing of Holly Bowles. This should have been a trip filled with joy and wonderful memories – it is beyond sad that it is not to be. My thoughts and my deepest sympathies are with her family and her friends. I am sure all Australians are thinking of Holly and her best friend Bianca Jones who tragically passed away yesterday.”

Foreign Minister Penny Wong also addressed the incident, acknowledging the prevalence of drink spiking and methanol poisoning in some parts of the world. “At this time, I would say to parents, to young people, please have a conversation about risks, please inform yourselves, please let’s work together to ensure this tragedy doesn’t happen again,” Wong urged.

As investigations continue, the families of the victims are left to mourn the loss of their loved ones, with many calling for greater awareness and safety measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
