Teen Mother Dies During Childbirth at Spanish Town Hospital Amid Doctors’ Strike

Spanish Town, Jamaica – Grief and outrage have consumed the community following the tragic death of 14-year-old Anna-Shay Campbell, who passed away during childbirth at the Spanish Town Hospital on Tuesday. The incident has sparked concerns about the quality of healthcare during a recent island-wide doctors’ strike and raised questions about the hospital’s response to the young mother’s condition.

Anna-Shay, described by her mother, Christine Campbell, as a bright and ambitious student with dreams of becoming a real estate agent, tragically never got to meet her son, whom she affectionately nicknamed “Peppa.”

The tragedy unfolded on Monday when Anna-Shay, nearing her due date, began experiencing labor pains. Despite seeking medical attention at the Spanish Town Hospital, Campbell claims she was turned away due to the ongoing doctors’ strike.

“They told me no doctors were working and that I should take her back home,” Campbell recounted. “I asked for a referral to KPH, but they said it didn’t make sense because no doctors were working anywhere due to the islandwide strike.”

Desperate, Campbell brought her daughter back to the hospital later that day as her condition worsened. However, she alleges that Anna-Shay received inadequate care, facing delays and encountering unsympathetic nurses.

“They told me my daughter died from very long and hard labor,” Campbell said, her voice breaking. “They said her cervix was damaged. They said her vagina was destroyed.”

The incident has ignited public outcry, with Campbell demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding her daughter’s death. She strongly believes that medical negligence played a significant role in the tragic outcome.

The Spanish Town Hospital, through CEO Jacqueline Ellis, has acknowledged the incident and confirmed that a full investigation is underway. “We are providing full support and assistance to the affected family during this incredibly difficult time,” Ellis stated.
