The Portland police have reported that criminal charges have been laid against a man from St. James, who was apprehended along Dolphin Bay in the parish on Wednesday, May 22, attempting to smuggle 12 illegal Haitian nationals out of the parish.
The accused has been identified as 33-year-old Christopher Piggott, also known as ‘Boysie,’ a resident of Mountpellier district in Anchovy, St. James. He has been charged with breaches of the Alien Act.
Piggott was transporting the illegal immigrants, who were part of a group that landed in Jamaica illegally by boat, at midnight last Sunday night.
Additionally, it is reported that the group of Haitian nationals, which includes a pregnant mother and children, was intercepted after the Black Nissan Serena motor vehicle in which they were traveling developed a puncture along a section of Anchovy Gardens in Port Antonio.
Piggott, who was driving the vehicle, was also arrested and subsequently charged.
Reports state that last Sunday night, residents alerted the police after spotting a 20-foot vessel on the Hector River, transporting individuals believed to be illegal immigrants. An investigation led to the arrest of eight other illegal immigrants.
Investigators believe that several other Haitian nationals may have arrived on the boat and are allegedly at large in the parish.
