The St James High School community is in mourning following the sudden death of senior teacher Sheldon Johnson, who collapsed and died on Monday shortly after attending a meeting at the school.
Johnson, 46, a native of Gayle Town in Clarendon, served as the school’s physics and computer technology teacher and had been a member of the staff since 2018.
According to reports, Johnson had just participated in a meeting with an official from the Ministry of Education’s Region Four office. After the meeting, he accompanied another teacher to a gas station in the Westgate area of Montego Bay, where he suddenly collapsed.
He was rushed to Cornwall Regional Hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Principal Joseph Williams described Johnson’s passing as a devastating loss for the institution, noting that he played a vital role in maintaining the school’s technology infrastructure, including computer repairs and internet services.
Williams said Johnson had no known illness and had recently been approved to begin vacation leave on September 1.
Staff members described him as a dedicated educator, a brilliant teacher, and a caring, easy-going individual whose sudden passing has left the entire school community in shock.
“The school is shaken, and his passing was too sudden since he was at school today. It is a shock, and everyone is in mourning,” one staff member said.
In a statement, Regional Director for the Ministry of Education’s Region Four, Dr. Michelle Pinnock, expressed sadness at Johnson’s passing and extended condolences to his family, colleagues, students, and the wider St James High School community.
His sudden death has left students, teachers, and loved ones grieving the loss of an educator remembered for his commitment, expertise, and warm personality.
