The St. James Family Court has dismissed charges against a 14-year-old student from Irwin High School, accused of fatally stabbing his 15-year-old classmate, Raniel Plummer, on April 18.
The defendant faced charges of murder and possession of an offensive weapon, but his attorney, Maurice McCurdy, successfully argued that the prosecution lacked sufficient evidence to establish a prima facie case.
The incident reportedly occurred when Plummer was attacked by a group of students outside the high school. During the altercation, the 14-year-old allegedly stabbed Plummer in the chest. Plummer was taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Attorney McCurdy emphasized that the court’s ruling considered the full context of the law and the facts. He noted the gravity of the case, expressing compassion for the grieving family and highlighting that the loss of a child is a significant tragedy for the nation. Despite the court’s decision, McCurdy stated that there is no cause for celebration, acknowledging the family’s pain.
Given the private nature of Family Court proceedings, further details were not disclosed.
