St. Elizabeth Man in Custody After Mob Attack Following Allegations of Child Sexual Assault

Black River, St. Elizabeth – A 59-year-old man is currently in police custody following an alleged mob attack in the Leeds district of St. Elizabeth over the weekend. The incident occurred after residents reportedly learned of allegations of the sexual assault of a six-year-old girl.

Head of the St. Elizabeth police, Superintendent Coleridge Minto, confirmed the incident on Tuesday. “The information we have is there is a sexual allegation against him and the community came down on him,” Superintendent Minto stated, while also confirming that a full investigation into both the alleged sexual assault and the subsequent mob attack is now underway.

Reports indicate that the alleged incident involving the child occurred last Saturday at her home. It is alleged that the man pulled the six-year-old girl from a verandah and fondled her.

Upon learning of the allegations, members of the community reportedly confronted the 59-year-old man and physically assaulted him. He was subsequently taken to the Black River Hospital for treatment of his injuries before being placed in police lockup.

This incident highlights the intense emotions and outrage that can erupt within communities when allegations of child sexual abuse surface. While the police are actively investigating the initial allegations of sexual assault, they will also be looking into the circumstances surrounding the mob attack.

Superintendent Minto urged residents to allow the justice system to take its course and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized that while the anger and concern of the community are understandable, vigilante justice can impede investigations and lead to further legal complications.

This news follows reports of Montego Bay reaching the JPL semifinals after a dramatic clash against nine-man Tivoli (reported on May 13th) and updates on Jamaican 4x400m runner Jodean Williams confirming a hamstring injury (reported on May 11th). However, the situation in St. Elizabeth underscores the serious issues of crime and community response that continue to be a concern across the island.

The investigation into the alleged sexual assault is ongoing, and the police are expected to release further details as they become available.
