A murder case involving the 2020 fatal stabbing of a Spanish Town labourer is set to proceed to trial after the court ruled that sufficient evidence exists against the accused.
Arion Beckford, otherwise known as “Yaw Yaw,” is charged in connection with the killing of 37-year-old Jevaughn Powell of Old Road, Thompson Pen in Spanish Town, St Catherine.
During proceedings on Wednesday, Parish Court Judge Courtney Maxwell determined that Beckford has a case to answer and ordered that the matter move to the St Catherine Circuit Court on June 11.
The accused was granted bail in the amount of $400,000 with surety. As part of his bail conditions, he must report regularly to the police in Clarendon.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on December 23, 2020, during a dispute in which Powell was allegedly stabbed by Beckford. Powell was later transported to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police launched an investigation following the killing and subsequently listed Beckford as a person of interest in the case.
Authorities reported that Beckford later fled to the United States before being deported to Jamaica on March 7, 2025.
Attorney-at-law Earl Hamilton is representing the accused.
