A St Catherine man who stabbed a woman to death last year during a dispute in Portmore, St Catherine, has been sentenced to three years in prison on a lesser charge of manslaughter.
The accused man, Ricardo Leachman, appeared before the St Catherine Circuit Court for the murder of Catherine Laing but had earlier pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Reports indicate that both Leachman and Laing were armed with knives during the altercation, and the accused ended up in possession of the weapon which he used to fatally stab Laing.
Both individuals sustained severe stab wounds, but Laing died after being admitted to the hospital, while the accused, also hospitalized, managed to recover.
Leachman, represented by Attorney-at-Law Earl Hamilton, informed Justice Bertram Morrison that his client was initially stabbed by the now deceased, and it was the same knife with which she was later wounded and succumbed to her injuries.
