St. Catherine Businessman Charged After Tragic Shooting Death of Son

St. Catherine, Jamaica – Rowan Hinds, a 57-year-old businessman from St. Catherine, has been charged following the tragic death of his three-year-old son, Rojaghn Hinds. The child reportedly used his father’s licensed firearm to shoot himself on July 28.

The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the family’s home in Oak Place, Ebony Vale. According to reports, Hinds had left his Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol under a sofa before stepping outside to dispose of garbage. Moments later, he heard an explosion and rushed back inside, where he found his partner cradling their son, who had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

The child was immediately rushed to the hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Spanish Town Criminal Investigations Branch quickly seized the firearm and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.

Hinds has since been charged with failure to secure and store a firearm and ammunition, as well as child endangerment. The charges highlight the legal responsibility of firearm owners to ensure their weapons are properly secured, especially in homes with young children.

The community remains in shock, grappling with the devastating loss, as the legal proceedings against Hinds move forward.
