Michael Belnavis, Mayor of St Ann’s Bay and Councillor, is recuperating at home after being attacked and chopped by an intruder at one of his properties in St Mary late Monday night.
The St Mary police have not yet received an official report about the incident, but preliminary details suggest that the attack occurred around 11:00 p.m. when Mayor Belnavis arrived at the property. Upon entering the house, he was confronted by an intruder who inflicted multiple chops to his upper body.
Despite his injuries, Belnavis managed to escape and drive himself to the St Ann’s Bay Regional Hospital, where he received treatment. He was later discharged and is now recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Jamaica Labour Party Senator Abka Fitz-Henley confirmed Belnavis’s condition, stating, “He is expected to get better pretty soon and is thankful for all the outpouring of good wishes.”
The St Mary police have not released further details about the attack, citing the lack of an official report. Investigators are expected to provide additional updates as more information becomes available.
The incident has raised concerns about safety in the area, with residents and officials alike awaiting further clarification from law enforcement. Meanwhile, supporters and colleagues have expressed relief that the mayor’s injuries are not severe and have wished him a speedy recovery.
