A justice of the peace (JP) has been sentenced to two years and six months in prison after pleading guilty in connection with a $27 million real estate fraud scheme.
Georgia Messam, 53, a paralegal clerk from St Ann, was sentenced on May 14, 2026, following an investigation by the Specialised Investigation Branch (SIB). The fraud reportedly involved a St Catherine businesswoman during a property transaction conducted between 2018 and 2019.
According to investigators, the complainant transferred more than $27 million to Messam’s bank account to facilitate the purchase of a property. However, authorities said the funds were never passed on to the attorney responsible for handling the transaction.
Prosecutors further alleged that Messam later produced a fraudulent letter falsely indicating that payment had been secured for the seller’s attorney, allowing the property title to be transferred before the scheme was uncovered.
Messam was arrested in February 2023 and subsequently charged with fraudulent conversion and engaging in transactions involving criminal property. She later pleaded guilty to the offences.
The court imposed sentences ranging from two years and three months to two years and six months at hard labour, with all terms ordered to run concurrently.
