A St Ann motorist who was behind the November 30, 2022 firey accident, which claimed the life of a firefighter in the vicinity of the Reynolds Shipping Pier, in Ocho Rios, was fined $600,000 or ordered to spend 12 months in prison, whenever he appeared before the St Ann Circuit Court last week.
The accused, Hortliff Thomas, was charged with the death of fire fighter, Lorenzo Douse, both of St Ann.
Reports are that about 2;40pm, fire fighters from the St Ann Fire Department responded to a fire in the vicinity of the shipping pier, and rushed to the location.
On reaching the area, Thomas who was driving a motor vehicle, attempted to overtake a line of traffic and lost control, slamming into the side of the firetruck.
The vehicle immediately burst into flames, and also pinned Douse beneath the wreckage.
He was eventually cut away by his colleagues, and he and Thomas were rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead, and Thomas treated and admitted in serious condition.
Thomas was subsequently charged with manslaughter, but pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
