Spanish Town Mayor’s Assault Case Set for Mediation in St Elizabeth Parish Court

The assault matter involving Norman Scott has been referred to mediation following its mention in the St Elizabeth Parish Court on Monday.

Scott is facing charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property stemming from an incident on Election Day. The allegations involve an altercation with Jamaica Labour Party supervisor Julie Francis.

During proceedings before Senior Parish Court Judge Steve Stewart, both parties agreed to pursue mediation as a means of resolving the dispute. The case is scheduled to return to court on June 9.

Scott is represented by attorney Charles Ganga-Singh, while King’s Counsel Tom Tavares-Finson is appearing on behalf of the complainant.

Reports indicate that the charges arose after Scott allegedly remained at a polling station beyond his designated time. It is further alleged that he was approached by the supervisor and asked to leave, leading to a confrontation.

Authorities claim that during the incident, Francis was struck in the face and her eyeglasses were damaged. The matter was subsequently reported to the police in St Elizabeth, prompting an investigation that led to formal charges being laid.

Scott has also reported that he was assaulted during the same incident.

At the time of the altercation, Scott was the People’s National Party candidate contesting the St Elizabeth South Eastern constituency.
