Sandals Foundation Boosts Caribbean Education with Over JMD $29 million in Scholarships and School Upgrades

As the new school year approaches, the Sandals Foundation has reaffirmed its dedication to education across the Caribbean with a substantial investment of approximately JMD $29 million. This generous contribution will fund scholarships, infrastructure improvements, teacher training, and the distribution of essential school supplies, ensuring that students throughout the region are well-equipped to succeed.

One of the cornerstones of this initiative is the Care for Kids Scholarship Programme, which has awarded nearly JMD $11 million in 2024 alone, benefiting 42 secondary and tertiary students. The programme offers more than just financial support—it provides a holistic support system that includes medical expenses, housing, and mentorship, guiding students throughout their educational journey. This comprehensive approach aims to give students the tools they need to excel in their studies and beyond.

Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, emphasized the transformative power of education, stating, “We believe that education is more than just a gateway to knowledge—it’s a lifeline to hope and opportunity. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of watching these scholarships change lives in ways that are truly inspiring. I’ve seen students grow into successful professionals, and I’ve witnessed how our infrastructure upgrades, teacher trainings, and school supplies have created environments where children can flourish.”

One of the scholarship recipients, Shavenya Smikle, recently completed her final year at Northern Caribbean University. Reflecting on her achievement, Shavenya said, “Being the first in my family to graduate from university is something I hold dearly. But to graduate with honors is an achievement that not only belongs to me but also to my family and peers. I want to be that light for my community, showing them that no matter your background, your dreams are attainable.”

In addition to scholarships, the Sandals Foundation has allocated approximately JMD $18 million for vital school infrastructure upgrades across the Caribbean. Projects include electrical rewiring at Exchange All Age School in St. Ann, bathroom facility upgrades at Flanker Primary School in St. James, and the upcoming reroofing of Whitehouse Early Childhood Institution in Westmoreland.

Principal Merfia Williams of Whitehouse Early Childhood Institution highlighted the importance of these upgrades, especially in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl. “The reroofing of Whitehouse Early Childhood Institution is crucial for our school’s recovery. This renovation will provide a safe and stable learning environment for our children, allowing them to focus on their education without concern for their safety. We deeply appreciate the Sandals Foundation’s swift response and continued support during these challenging times,” said Williams.

To further support parents and students as they prepare for the new academic year, Sandals Foundation ambassadors have hosted several back-to-school fairs and resource distributions, reaching approximately 1,500 children. Additionally, through the foundation’s partnership with Auld’s Academy & Charity Foundation, the “Touch a Thousand Hearts” Initiative has provided another 1,000 children with necessary school supplies.

The Sandals Foundation’s commitment to education extends to capacity-building efforts for educators as well. In collaboration with Great Shape! Inc., a U.S.-based organization, the foundation has facilitated literacy, numeracy, and computer workshops for over 70 educators in Negril, Westmoreland, through the ‘Teach the Teachers’ programme. This initiative involved 40 volunteer instructors and is aimed at enhancing the skills and effectiveness of the island’s educators.
