Andre Ruddock told the Home Circuit Court in Kingston on Monday, November 2, that he witnessed church leader Kevin Smith kill Taneka Gardner, denying that he carried out the fatal attack.
Ruddock is on trial for the murder of the 39-year-old woman at Pathways International Kingdom Restoration Ministries in Albion, St James, on October 17, 2021. Prosecutors allege that he killed Gardner on Smith’s instructions.
Giving sworn evidence in his defence, Ruddock claimed he was bringing cattle into the church compound when he saw Smith holding a knife near a retaining wall. He testified that Gardner was kneeling when Smith held her head and cut her throat.
Ruddock further alleged that Smith moved onto a boardwalk and later fired a gun at security personnel. He said he took cover near the entrance when the shooting began. These claims form part of his defence testimony.
His account challenges the prosecution’s case, which has included police testimony about alleged admissions by Ruddock that he killed Gardner.
