Kingston, Jamaica — Roje Stona delivered a stunning performance to clinch the gold medal in the men’s discus throw at the Olympic Games at Stade de France in Paris on Wednesday, setting a new Olympic record with a throw of 70.00m.
This victory marks Jamaica’s first gold medal of the Games and its first-ever gold in any throwing event at a senior major global championship. Stona’s throw in the fourth round catapulted him from sixth to first place, breaking the previous Olympic record of 69.89m set by Virgilijus Alekna of Lithuania in 2004.
Mykolas Alekna, son of the former record holder and current world record holder, secured silver with 69.97m, and Australia’s Matthew Denny took bronze with 69.31m. Stona’s throw also improved his personal best from 69.05m, positioning him second in Jamaican history behind national record holder Fedrick Dacres (70.78m).
Jamaica saw three athletes in the final, with Ralford Mullings finishing ninth with 65.61m and Traves Smikle tenth with 64.97m, both narrowly missing additional throws. This victory adds to Jamaica’s impressive track and field legacy, now extending into throwing events with this groundbreaking achievement.
