Rift Emerges in JLP Over Successor for Manchester North Eastern as Audley Shaw Prepares to Exit

The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is facing internal tensions in Manchester North Eastern over who should succeed veteran politician Audley Shaw as the party’s candidate for the next general election. Shaw, who has represented the constituency since 1993, announced at a constituency conference on Sunday at Christiana High School that he will not seek re-election.

Shaw Endorses Omar Miller

During his announcement, Shaw endorsed Craighead Division Councillor Omar Miller, citing Miller’s extensive service in local government alongside his father, who previously held the same position.

“Omar and his father have served in the council for the Craighead division for a total of 35 years. I can’t think of a better person to take over from me. He has been a steadfast supporter and has learned well,” Shaw declared to applause from party supporters.

Rival Aspirant Responds

However, Shaw’s endorsement has not gone unchallenged. Hidran McKulsky, principal of Holmwood Technical High School and a former JLP candidate for Manchester Southern in 2016, has expressed concerns about the process.

In a public statement on Sunday, McKulsky’s team claimed he was not invited to the conference, framing the exclusion as part of a deliberate strategy to sideline him.

“We believe the conference would have been an ideal opportunity for both aspirants to be presented to the people of North Eastern Manchester,” the statement read. Despite this, McKulsky’s team emphasized their confidence in the JLP’s selection process, which does not automatically accept endorsed candidates.

Party Leadership Urges Calm

Deputy Leader of Area Council Three, Michael Stern, confirmed that two applications have been received for the Manchester North Eastern ticket. He assured that the party’s constitutionally mandated process will determine the final candidate.

“Endorsements are part of the process, but they don’t guarantee anything. We follow polling and internal evaluations before a decision is made,” Stern explained.

Historical Context and Future Challenges

Shaw has held the seat since 1993, consistently increasing his margin of victory, including a commanding 3,907-vote lead in the 2020 general election. However, recent local government elections showed signs of waning support for the JLP in the constituency.

For the first time since 1986, the opposition People’s National Party (PNP) won both the Walderston and Christiana divisions earlier this year, raising questions about the JLP’s ability to retain the seat.

As the candidate selection process continues, the rift within the JLP draws attention to the high stakes for Manchester North Eastern, a constituency with a strong history of JLP representation under Shaw’s leadership.
