WESTMORELAND, Jamaica — Questions are being raised over the circumstances surrounding the death of a Westmoreland farmer and businessman following a reported confrontation with members of the security forces.
The deceased has been identified in reports as 34-year-old Jordan Smith, a farmer and water-truck operator from Seaford Town, Westmoreland.
According to the police account reported by local media, members of the security forces carried out a targeted operation at Smith’s home in the early hours of Friday. Police reportedly said they came under gunfire as they approached the property and returned fire.
Smith was subsequently found inside the house suffering from gunshot wounds. An illegal firearm was reportedly recovered at the scene.
However, residents and members of Smith’s family have disputed the claim that a shootout took place.
Smith’s father reportedly said police opened fire after entering the yard. He pointed to bullet holes on the exterior of the house and questioned why the windows appeared to be undamaged if shots had been fired from inside.
Relatives have also described Smith as a hardworking farmer who was involved in the community and said they were unaware of him having any significant history of conflict with the police.
The family has raised additional concerns about the handling of the crime scene. Relatives reportedly claimed that live rounds, spent ammunition and other material remained at the property after investigators had left.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is involved in examining the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting. The agency has not publicly established, based on the reports available, whether the police account or the residents’ account is accurate.
The conflicting accounts have left questions about what happened at the property in the early hours of Friday. Investigators are expected to examine the physical evidence, including the location of bullet impacts, ammunition and the firearm reportedly recovered, as part of determining the circumstances that led to Smith’s death.
Until the investigation is completed, the competing accounts remain allegations and have not been independently established.
