Residents of Red Hills Road in St Andrew have claimed that a man who was fatally shot by police in the area this morning was seriously ill and receiving medical care.
The claim was disclosed by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which is probing the circumstances surrounding the shooting that sparked a fiery protest by residents.
INDECOM Commissioner Hugh Faulkner said residents have been vocal in their protests, claiming that the deceased, 35-year-old Shane Castleton, was “gravely ill and of feeble movements.”
Castleton was fatally shot along Karl Samuda Avenue by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Fugitive Apprehension Team.
Faulkner said the investigation remains in its preliminary stages and that all the police officers involved have been interviewed and their accounts obtained.
He said INDECOM is also awaiting relevant documentary material, while steps are being taken to have the firearms used by the law enforcement personnel, as well as the firearm reportedly recovered at the scene, submitted to the forensic laboratory.
“An INDECOM team and investigators are engaged in a thorough and detailed examination of the circumstances leading to the incident,” Faulkner said.
