The Freeport police have arrested a man who attempted to rape a 76-year-old woman while she and another female were jogging in the Catherine Hall area of Montego Bay, St. James, on Monday morning.
The elderly woman and her younger companion were engaged in their regular morning exercise when they encountered a man known as ‘Patrick.’ He requested to accompany them through a dirt track in the area. The women refused, prompting ‘Patrick’ to grab the hand of the 76-year-old while implying he had a firearm in his waistband.
The younger woman managed to escape and made her way to the nearby Freeport police station, where she reported the incident.
Meanwhile, ‘Patrick’ forced the elderly woman into the bushes, removed her clothing, and undressed himself, attempting to rape her. However, the determined woman fought back, striking ‘Patrick’ on the head with a large stone.
According to police, ‘Patrick’ became enraged and began to hit and choke his victim. By this time, the younger woman had returned to the location with the police. They found ‘Patrick’ still attempting to rape the elderly woman.
He tried to flee but was apprehended by the lawmen and taken into custody. The injured woman was transported to Cornwall Regional Hospital for treatment.
‘Patrick’ was also treated at the hospital for a head wound and later released into police custody.
