The legal fraternity in western Jamaica is in mourning following the death of veteran attorney Lavern Walters on Sunday morning. Walters, a prominent member of the Cornwall Bar Association (CBA) and a respected legal figure in Montego Bay, St. James, succumbed to a prolonged illness, leaving a legacy of advocacy and justice behind.
CBA president Michael Hemmings described Walters as a beloved colleague and an accomplished professional. “What I can say is that she was loved and respected by all, a great advocate and friend. She will be truly missed by us all. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” Hemmings said in a heartfelt tribute.
Walters’ journey in law began after graduating from Mt. Alvernia High School in Montego Bay and earning her legal qualifications at the Norman Manley Law School in 2006. Soon after, she was admitted to practice law, taking on challenging cases that cemented her reputation as a skilled attorney.
Her early career included serving as Crown Counsel and working with the Administrator General’s Department, where she honed her skills in representing the interests of vulnerable parties.
Colleagues and friends remember Walters as a dedicated professional who approached her work with integrity and compassion. Outside of the courtroom, she was a valued mentor and advocate for young attorneys, leaving an indelible impact on the legal fraternity in western Jamaica.
