Prince Harry rejected an offer to spend the first anniversary of the Queen’s death with his father, according to The Sun.
This invitation was perceived as an olive branch from King Charles, showing he is willing to forgive his youngest son for his repeated attacks at the family, the outlet reported.
The Duke of Sussex was already in England when Charles invited him to pay his respects at Balmoral, the Scottish home of the Royal Family, what one expert called “a golden opportunity missed,” The Sun said.
“He should have braved it out and gone to see them. If the King invites you to Balmoral, then most people would cancel all of their travel plans. He could have easily re-arranged things slightly to allow himself the time,” Ingrid Seward, editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, said.
Harry’s rejection came after he formally asked for a royal accommodation and security from his father’s office for his one-night stopover for his appearance at a Sept. 7 charity event, the 2023 WellChild Awards in West London.
His request was denied because none of the family’s properties in Windsor or the capital city were available for his stay, Harry was told.
Queen Elizabeth died Sept. 8, 2022. If Harry had gone to Balmoral it would have marked the first time he, Charles and Charles’ wife, Queen Consort Camilla, would have been together since Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in Sept. 2022.
Instead, Harry claimed his busy travel schedule prevented him from joining Charles, and instead held a short solo vigil at the Queen’s resting place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle, where he married Meghan Markle in 2018.
Then, he left England to fly to Dussledorf, Germany for the Invictus Games, where he was joined by his wife.
During the awards ceremony, he did mention his late grandmother, saying, “I know she’s looking down on all of us tonight.”
Offering the invitation was a big step for the King, Seward said.
“I’m glad he is showing some backbone and offering this olive branch,” she noted. “… Charles will always welcome him as he is a forgiving man and it’s his son. But it has to be on his terms and Harry has to apologize, not the other way round.”
