PORTMORE, St Catherine — Residents of Marlin Way in Braeton have been left reeling following the brutal killing of a 63-year-old woman inside her home on Tuesday morning.
Dead is Sonia LaBeach Dillion, a long-time supervisor at Sampars in Cross Roads, St Andrew, and a mother of two. She was discovered with multiple chop wounds at her residence shortly after 9:00 a.m.
Her 41-year-old daughter was also attacked during the incident and remains in hospital in serious but stable condition.
Investigators attached to the Greater Portmore Police and the Criminal Investigation Branch are leading the probe. Up to late Tuesday, lawmen were searching for a man believed to be of unsound mind in connection with the attack. Earlier reports that a suspect had been apprehended were not confirmed.
Police sources indicate that the assailant reportedly gained entry to the house and used a machete to inflict fatal injuries on Dillion before fleeing. Detectives believe the daughter was wounded while attempting to defend herself. CCTV footage said to show a man leaving the premises shortly after the attack is now forming part of the investigation.
Residents say they had previously expressed concerns about the individual now being sought. Some community members alleged that he had displayed troubling behaviour in the area and had fallen on difficult times, at one point sleeping in nearby bushes and open lots. Others said he had received assistance, including food, from residents.
Family members gathered outside the home as undertakers removed Dillion’s body, while co-workers at her workplace were thrown into mourning after learning of her death. Colleagues described her as firm but caring and said her absence from work that morning initially raised concern.
The killing has intensified discussions within the community about safety and mental health intervention. Police continue their search for the suspect as Marlin Way struggles to come to terms with the tragedy.
The St Catherine South Police Division has recorded two murders up to February 14.
