Kingston, Jamaica — Dancehall artiste Lisa Hyper was arrested Tuesday night at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston after allegedly assaulting an airport employee.
The incident reportedly occurred during an argument, during which she used abusive language towards police officers and airport staff. The entertainer was live on her TikTok account when the incident took place.
Following the arrest, Lisa Hyper’s family expressed relief, citing concerns over her recent behavior. “Lisa’s unfortunate arrest is actually a stroke of good fortune for the family because we have been worried about Lisa for weeks, and now she is in a safe, secure environment,” said her sister, Tasha Gooden. The family is working to expedite her release into the care of mental health professionals at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI). “My father is on the way to UHWI to get proof of Lisa’s medical condition and then secure the documents to deal with her bail,” Gooden added.
Lisa Hyper, known as the ‘First Lady of Gaza’ and a prominent member of Vybz Kartel’s Portmore Empire, has previously been open about her struggles with mental health. In a recent interview, she discussed being diagnosed with psychosis and bipolar disorder, stating, “I was diagnosed with psychosis and bipolar disorder, so I still have to visit the doctor for continuous assessment.”
The family is appealing to the public for understanding, emphasizing that her recent social media rants are a direct result of her illness. “We want the public to know that Lisa is not well. We are asking for their understanding,” Gooden stated.
Lisa Hyper is renowned for tracks such as “Amazing,” “Money Don’t Sleep,” “Sculpture,” and “Nuh Frighten.” Her recent releases include “Soul Cry,” where she addresses her mental health challenges, and “Altitude,” a collaboration with Shawn Storm.
The family is coordinating with UHWI and legal representatives to ensure she receives the necessary care and support during this time.
