Portmore Teacher Charged After Alleged Gun Assault and Weapon Seizure at Home

A St Catherine teacher has been charged following an alleged domestic dispute at his Greater Portmore residence that reportedly led to the discovery of illegal weapons and ammunition.

Police identified the accused as 44-year-old Joel Ellis of 7 East, Greater Portmore. He now faces multiple charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon, dealing in a prohibited weapon, unauthorised possession of ammunition, and assault at common law.

According to investigators assigned to the Greater Portmore division, the incident took place shortly before 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday. Reports indicate that during a dispute with his girlfriend, Ellis allegedly produced a firearm, pointed it at her, and struck her in the face with it.

The matter was reported to the police, who later carried out an operation at the premises. During a search of the house, officers reportedly recovered a Smith & Wesson .38 revolver containing two rounds of ammunition. The weapon was said to have been hidden inside a black bag under a bed.

Law enforcement officers also report that an imitation Glock firearm loaded with five imitation 9mm cartridges was found in a box inside the bedroom.

The weapons and ammunition were confiscated, and Ellis was taken into custody. Police say he was formally charged after participating in a question-and-answer interview conducted in the presence of his attorney.
