Pope Francis Hospitalized with Bilateral Pneumonia

Pope Francis, aged 88, has been diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia and remains hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. The Vatican reports that his clinical condition is “complex,” following his admission on February 14 due to breathing difficulties initially attributed to bronchitis.

Medical evaluations, including laboratory tests and chest X-rays, have revealed a polymicrobial infection affecting both lungs. This has necessitated the use of corticosteroids and antibiotics, complicating the therapeutic approach. A follow-up chest CT scan confirmed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, leading to adjustments in his medication regimen.

Despite these challenges, the Vatican assures that Pope Francis is in good spirits. He has been engaging in limited activities, such as receiving the Eucharist, praying, and reading. All public appointments, including the Wednesday General Audience, have been canceled through February 22 to allow for his recovery.

Pope Francis has a history of respiratory issues, including a partial lung removal in his youth, making him more susceptible to such infections. In March 2023, he was hospitalized for a respiratory infection but recovered to resume his duties.

The Vatican has not specified the expected duration of his current hospitalization, emphasizing the need for comprehensive treatment given the complexity of his condition. The global Catholic community continues to offer prayers and well-wishes for the Holy Father’s swift recovery.
