Policewoman Dies in Accidental Shooting in St Ann

In a span of less than 24 hours, two separate incidents involving accidental firearm discharges have occurred within the Jamaican police force, resulting in one fatality and one injury.

A policewoman in St. Ann has died from a gunshot wound sustained in an incident that occurred shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Friday in the Exchange community of Ocho Rios.

Preliminary reports suggest that she may have accidentally discharged her service weapon, resulting in an upper body injury. She was immediately transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The Jamaica Constabulary Force has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

On the previous evening, a trainee constable at the Glengoffe Police Station in St. Catherine accidentally shot himself. The incident occurred around 8:15 p.m. while the trainee was adjusting his belt. Reports indicate that he placed his firearm on top of a motor vehicle, and as he retrieved it, the weapon fell to the ground and discharged, striking him. He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he remains admitted. The Police High Command has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident.
