Kingston, Jamaica — The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) rolled out the red carpet for a unique hero at the Border Security Branch Conference on October 30 at the Police Officer’s Club in Kingston.
The honoree? Max, a two-year-old Belgian Malinois Shepherd, whose keen instincts and bravery have helped dismantle criminal networks and seize dangerous contraband. Alongside his dedicated handler, Constable Shavar Manning, Max was celebrated for his significant contribution to public safety.
A rising star in the JCF, Max has proven invaluable in operations that have led to the recovery of illegal firearms, narcotics, and other contraband items. Among his many achievements, Max has detected a hidden submachine gun, which in turn led officers to uncover a JCF ballistic vest, uncustomed cigarettes, and a substantial quantity of suspected ganja. His exceptional scent detection abilities have also helped officers unearth a Smith and Wesson 9mm pistol concealed in a buried bucket and, more recently, a Glock 19 pistol.

JCF officials praised Max’s achievements, with representatives emphasizing the “indispensable partnership” between him and Constable Manning, whose dedication makes their joint efforts highly effective. The synergy between man and dog has underscored the pivotal role that service animals play in law enforcement and crime prevention.
“This is more than just a celebration of Max’s accomplishments,” said one JCF official. “It’s a reminder of the powerful impact animals can have in making our communities safer. Max’s bravery and dedication inspire not only his fellow canines but all of us in the JCF and beyond.”
As Max trotted away from his moment in the spotlight, the JCF left a clear message: heroes come in all shapes and sizes—and sometimes with wagging tails and a nose for justice.
