St. Catherine, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – A veteran police sergeant who was brutally attacked by gunmen at his Portmore residence last week has died from his injuries.
He has been identified as 54-year-old Sergeant Patrick Mahoney, who was stationed at the Spanish Town Police Station.
Reports are that around 9:50 p.m. on Thursday, the sergeant had just returned home and was stepping out of his vehicle when armed masked men ambushed him. The criminals opened fire, hitting the lawman multiple times before fleeing the scene.
Mahoney was rushed to hospital where he battled for his life, but sadly succumbed to his injuries on Monday morning.
Head of the St. Catherine North Police Division, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, described the fallen officer as a disciplined and dedicated member of the force.
“The Sergeant was always punctual and would complete any task given. He is sadly missed and condolences to his family and colleagues,” Nicholson said, noting that grief counselling is being provided for officers.
Superintendent Nicholson also reaffirmed the police’s commitment to fighting crime despite the devastating loss:
“We remain relentless in the fight against crime, as we lost three in three weeks, but the first by violence.”
So far this year, police in the division have seized 51 illegal firearms and over 500 rounds of ammunition, as the war against criminals intensifies.
The gun attack on Sergeant Mahoney has once again left both the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the wider community in mourning.
