Manchester, Jamaica — Police are searching for the mother of a two-month-old infant whose body was discovered Tuesday morning in the Top Hill community.
The child has been identified as Mateo Forbes.
Authorities say the baby was found face down in a bucket of water inside the home. Investigators believe the child’s mother may be responsible for the incident and report that she fled the residence shortly after the discovery.
The infant’s paternal grandfather, Jeffrey Forbes, told Nationwide News that the child’s mother has struggled with mental health issues in the past. He also alleged that she had previously attempted to set the family’s home on fire.
According to Mr. Forbes, the woman contacted the baby’s father and told him that she had killed their son.
However, a neighbour said that as recently as Monday night the mother appeared to be behaving normally. The neighbour also noted that the woman had been caring for the infant and showed no visible signs of distress before the child was found dead.
Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death are ongoing as efforts continue to locate the child’s mother.
