St. Thomas, Jamaica — The swift and decisive actions of law enforcement officers attached to the St. Thomas Police Division have resulted in the fatal shooting of an unidentified man believed to be responsible for the brutal murder of 14-year-old Tianna Sutherland, a United States citizen who was on holiday visiting relatives.
According to reports from the Morant Bay Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), the tragic incident unfolded on the morning of Wednesday, July 2, in the community of Blue Mahoe.
It is reported that Tianna was at home when a man allegedly gained entry through an open grill. A struggle ensued, during which the young girl was stabbed multiple times. Reports indicate that despite her injuries, Tianna managed to wound her attacker and alert her father via telephone.
Her father rushed to the scene and found Tianna lying in the kitchen with multiple stab wounds. She was rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
An immediate investigation led members of the St. Thomas Operational Support Team (OST) to a nearby concrete dwelling. Following a trail of blood, the officers discovered bloody clothing outside the premises. Upon entering the dwelling, they were reportedly attacked by a naked man armed with a machete.
Police say they were forced to take evasive action and neutralize the threat. A subsequent search of the building revealed Tianna’s phone and jewellery, allegedly taken during the attack.
The matter has been reported to the Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) as well as the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), which are investigating the police use of force as per protocol.
The identity of the suspect has not yet been released.
