Chicago, Illinois — Four people are dead and at least 14 others are hospitalised following a drive-by shooting late Wednesday night in Chicago’s River North neighbourhood, police confirmed on Thursday.
Authorities say the incident occurred outside a restaurant and lounge that had reportedly hosted an album release party for a rapper. A crowd had gathered when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside opened fire before speeding away.
Police reported that 13 women and five men, ranging in age from 21 to 32, were struck by gunfire. Among the deceased are two women and two men.
At least three victims remain in critical condition.
“When I arrived last night it was absolute chaos,” said Chicago pastor Donovan Price, who works with communities during crises. “People were screaming, blood was on the streets, and people were laying on the ground trying to find their loved ones.”
Video footage from the scene showed a heavy police presence and multiple ambulances, while crowds of distraught family members and friends gathered outside hospitals, many crying as they awaited news.
Of those injured, nine — including the two deceased women — were taken to Northwestern Hospital, while five — including the two deceased men — were transported to John H Stroger Hospital.
No arrests have been made so far, and police say the investigation is ongoing.
