KINGSTON, Jamaica — Police have charged an 18-year-old student in connection with a double murder that took place at the busy intersection of North and Orange Streets in downtown Kingston last month.
The accused, Evroy Smith, also known as “Giant,” hails from Upper Oxford Street, Kingston 14, and faces charges following an intense investigation by the Major Investigations Division (MID).
Smith, now formally charged, faces two counts of murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, and unauthorized possession of ammunition. The charges stem from the October 22 shooting that claimed the lives of 23-year-old Genireo “Dantae” Mitchell, an employee of the Overseas Examination Commission, and 21-year-old Donald Walters Jr., also known as “Donto,” a car wash attendant from Dumfries Street in Denham Town.
Police reports indicate that around 7:50 a.m. on October 22, Mitchell and Walters were walking along the roadway when two armed men approached them and opened fire. Both men sustained multiple gunshot wounds, and emergency responders transported them to the Kingston Public Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
Smith’s arrest and subsequent charges followed a series of investigative measures. While in custody at the Metcalfe Street Juvenile Remand Centre, Smith underwent a question-and-answer session with authorities in the presence of his attorney, Everton Smith. Additionally, a witness positively identified Smith during a video identification parade held on November 4, aiding in the case’s progression.
