Clarendon North Central, a JLP stronghold for over two decades, could see a shake-up as PNP newcomer Dr. Aujae Dixon vies for the seat in the September 3 election. The constituency last went to the PNP in 1997.
Dixon, 31, a medical doctor with paediatric experience, says his deep roots in the area give him an edge. A former youth aide to ex-Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller, he has been active in community projects like back-to-school free medicals and church initiatives.
“The biggest challenges here are water and roads,” Dixon told The Gleaner. “Communities pay up to $20,000 monthly for water, and interior roads are in poor condition.”
Despite the JLP’s long dominance, Dixon says his local presence and community work have laid the groundwork for a possible upset. “For the rest of the country it may be a surprise, but I expect to win,” he declared.
The constituency, which includes Mocho, Rock River, and Chapelton, has 24,854 registered voters, all set to head to the polls next week.
