Physical Child Abuse: I have watched this video very carefully and from the contents of the video, it is very clear this is a mother which is completely out of balance. She needs help. No parent in her healthy mind would do such a thing to her child. It is therefore important that she gets the help that is mentally needed to get her back in balance. The child will also need help, she has been a victim of a very serious crime, and this is a very traumatic experience at such a young age. This is where the authorities need to enter the situation.
From a parent point of view, all parents would like to bring up their child/children in a proper manner. In saying this, this is no justification for beating them, May I remind all parents that beating a child has its long-term downside. Some of which are as follows:
- Psychologically, damage is done to this child for the rest of their life. Remember, beating experience causes trauma. A traumatic experience can be treated, it cannot be cured.
- You damage the trust they have in you as a parent. You make them your enemies instead of your beloved child.
- Studies have shown that children that have been exposed to this type of aggression themselves can end up being an aggressor in the future. It is not always the case but there is a very strong link here.
Elizabeth Gershoff was part of a team made up of researchers from the University of Texas and the University of Michigan who looked into the risks associated with physically disciplining a child.
They used five decades of research involving more than 160,000 children to form what they call a “meta-analysis” — an average of all the research to date.
Their conclusions, published in the Journal of Family Psychology, show that smacking is associated with several unintended outcomes. They include mental health problems, lower cognitive ability and a risk of accepting physical abuse as a norm later in life.
Physical Child Abuse: Risks of harm from spanking confirmed by analysis of 5 decades of research
Date: April 25, 2016
Source: University of Texas at Austin
Summary: The more children are spanked, the more likely they are to defy their parents and to experience increased anti-social behavior, aggression, mental health problems and cognitive difficulties, according to a new meta-analysis of 50 years of research on spanking.
Chief Executive Officer of the CPFSA, Rosalee Gage-Grey made the following statement «CPFSA is reminding parents and guardians that any form of hurt inflicted on a child is considered child abuse.
She is, therefore, encouraging parents and guardians to use alternatives to corporal punishment when disciplining their children.
“Beating children has long-term effects and this should never be practised,” she advised in the statement.
While Rosalee Gage-Grey is showing empathy here in this situation, I was am and is expecting her to state more clearly what really alternatives she is talking about. I have not seen it mentioned that this mother from the contents of the video is unwell. Neither have I seen where it has been stated that child abuse is against the law of the land and the consequences for such practices. It is time there is more focus on this team. My question is, what treatment, what plan is there in place to stop this inhumane act? Will the mother be helped? Is she having a psychological problem that has never been helped and her frustration is taken out on this child? Or will she be just a prisoner charged for what she has done? What happens after she served her sentence if she is imprisoned? What offer is there for this child?
Physical Child Abuse: Its time now for the respective authorities to implement new areas of improvement to address this issue. Many criminals are offsprings of Child Abuse. Help is needed and its needed very fast.
